An Introduction to the GED Test
Although there are several meanings for the acronym GED, the most common is General Equivalency Diploma. The GED test can be taken in attempt to earn this diploma. In basic terms it is equivalent to a traditional high school diploma. The rate of high school dropouts may have improved over the years, but there are still many people who are well into adulthood that have not obtained their high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
This general education diploma as it is sometimes known equals a high school education in the eyes of colleges, universities and employers. If you are a high school dropout planning to pursue higher education as an adult, you will need to obtain a GED diploma before you can begin the college application process. When getting GED ready, you should become familiar with the format of the test. There are five main sections of the GED test. They are as follows: Language Arts (Writing), Language Arts (Reading), Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. In order to pass the GED test, you need only score higher than 40 percent of seniors in high school. After successful completion of the GED examination you will receive your detailed test results, transcripts and a certificate. These documents are important to have when applying at colleges or even for jobs that require a high school diploma or the equivalent.

Can You Take the GED Test Online?
The
bad news for anyone who wants a fast, easy way to take the GED exam is that you
cannot take the GED test online. The good news is that there are many practice
GED test online resources and other online GED testing study guides that can
help you prepare for the real thing. The official test is administered at an
approved location usually by your local adult education department or facility.
The American Council on Education (ACE) is in charge of everything related to
the GED test.
The
ACE has a fantastic website that goes over everything from GED history to GED
preparation. This exam was first developed in 1942 for returning veterans who
needed to complete their high school education and enter the traditional
workforce. Even back then, a high school education was important. Today, it is
practically a requirement for even the most menial job. If you want to continue
your education through a college or university a GED is absolutely required if
you do not possess a high school diploma. According to the ACE the acronym for
GED stands for General Educational Development, however many people call it the
General Equivalency Diploma.
There
are lots of practice tests on the Internet that can give you an idea of the
academic areas you are good at and which ones you need to work on. The GED is
broken into five sections. Language Arts is divided into two -- Writing and
Reading. The writing section does require an essay. The other sections are
Math, Science and Social Studies. The material covered is the same material that
high school seniors would know upon graduation. To pass, you need only meet or
exceed the scores of 40 percent of graduating students. Your test administrator
can explain more about the scoring process.
You can also find more information about the GED test online and the scoring process. The ACE states that to pass the test you must have a combined score of 2250. Each different section must have a score of 410 or more. Practice tests can be very helpful because they clearly show you an estimated score for each section. Although the real test features different questions, the online practice tests are certainly a good way to prepare.
